Vegetables to plant in July - Zone 9 - Succession Planting

When I first started gardening I thought you had to start your summer garden in May after the last frost and if you didn’t plant in May, well you were just out of luck for that year. Over the years of gardening I have slowly learned about succession planting and man has it changed the game when it comes to my gardening and how much crop I can get throughout the spring and summer months. Once you learn about succession planting you can truly harvest so much more from your garden it is quite amazing!

Before we dive into what vegetables to plant in the July, if you just started gardening and are feeling a bit overwhelmed, don’t worry! That is actually the only reason I am creating these posts. To share what I have learned along the way.

What is Succession Planting?

Succession planting can be best summarized as sowing the same crop multiple times spaced out over a few days or weeks (intervals) throughout the appropriate growing season.

If you plant everything all at once all your plants will mature at the same time and your crop will be ready all at the same time. You want to space out planting in order to harvest your crop throughout the year.

How often should you plant?

Follow these general guidelines for succession-planting vegetable crops at intervals of 7 days, 10 days, 14 days, 21 days, and 30 days. Take note that the timing intervals listed here are based on standard growing practices.

I typically plant seeds every 14 days. It keeps it easy to track.

What crops to succession plant?

  • Leafy greens

  • Root crops : beets, carrots, turnips, radishes,

  • Corn

  • Beans

  • Peas

  • Cilantro

  • Onions

  • Flowers: Zenia’s, Cosmo’s, Sunflowers

Lettuce: I was super surprised to find out this year how easy it is to grow lettuce! You can start lettuce from seed and it grows pretty quickly and you will probably have more lettuce than you can eat! Definitely grow lettuce in your garden.

Radishes: I love radishes on my salads, but you definitely want to succession plant this crop as they take awhile to grow.

Beets: Probably my favorite. If you love beets check out my Beet recipe here.

Corn: Corn on the cob is the best, but corn doesn’t last too long in the fridge, so make sure to plant corn every 14 days throughout the summer. If you are planting your corn to freeze then you can plant this all at once.

Flowers: I love flowers in my garden! I throw Zenia and Cosmo seeds out every once in awhile to keep flowers throughout the summer. I also like to plant sunflower seeds in May, June, and July!
