10 Vegetables To Plant In Fall

I am on my third year of gardening in the Fall and am so excited about it. I have learned so much these last couple of years and can’t wait to put that knowledge to use.

You see, I have always wanted to be able to garden , but wasn’t able to as I lived in an apartment in the city. I finally moved back to my hometown and bought a piece of land.

Each year I garden I seem to learn something new, but I know when I first started gardening I had absolutely no idea what to plant summer, fall, winter, or spring. I did a ton of research, had quite a bit of trial and error, and now want to share some of that knowledge with you.

Before we dive into what vegetables to plant in the Fall, if you are just getting started and feeling a bit overwhelmed don’t worry. We have all been there. Don’t give up! That is actually the reason I am creating these posts. To share what I have learned along the way.

Ok so Fall is right around the corner. The evening is starting to cool off, the mornings smell like rain from the dew, and thunder storms are rolling in! That means it is time to start planning your Fall vegetable garden. Lets talk about 10 vegetables to plant in the Fall.

10 Vegetables To Plant In Fall

Lettuce: I was super surprised to find out this year how easy it is to grow lettuce! You can start lettuce from seed and it grows pretty quickly and you will probably have more lettuce than you can eat! Definitely grow lettuce in your garden this fall.

Kale: I bought my kale from Lowes as a small plant. It grew to be 4’ tall! I love to have Kale in my smoothies. You can’t taste it and you get your greens for the day.

Check out all my smoothie recipes here.

Onions: Onions are one of the things we eat the most. I seem to use onions in pretty much everything that I cook! Onions are a great fall vegetable to plant.

Garlic: I grew my first garlic last year. I was surprised with how easy it was to grow. All you need to do is take a clove of garlic, place it in water, wait for it to sprout in each clove, and then plant it. It does take quite a while to grow so don’t get to antsy and pull it up too quickly or else your garlic will be quite small.

Cabbage: You will want to buy the plant from your local nursery. Once you plant it, you will have to wait a few months but let me tell you, home gown cabbage is so much more delicious that store bought cabbage.

Beets: Beets have been something that I have been successful growing since I started gardening. I absolutely love beets. You will want to plant your beets close together and from seed.

Carrots: Carrots are great for fall because basically every soup recipe calls for carrots, and I mean…. Fall is the perfect time for soup! You will want to plant your carrots from seed.

Broccoli: I had a hard time with broccoli but I am going to try again this year. I ended up getting quite a bit of pests on my broccoli and eventually had to pull the plants. I am going to be buying my broccoli from our local nursery this year.

Cauliflower: Cauliflower was the same as broccoli for me, but it is a fall vegetable that I want to try and plant again!

Brussels Sprouts: I am currently trying to grow Brussels sprouts from seed, but have little faith that it will work so I fully plan to buy mine from our local nursery

Bonus Plant: Potatoes! Potatoes do great in the summer and the fall! I am going to be planting sweet potatoes and red potatoes. The cool thing about potatoes is you can use the potato that you buy from the store, put it in the ground, and you will end up with a bunch more potatoes!

There you have it! 10 vegetables to plant in the Fall. I will be planting all of these plus beans and snap peas.

Wishing you nothing but beautiful Fall days and an amazing garden.
