Hiking Hairstyles for Long Hair

I freaking love hiking, but man sometimes your hair can really be a problem. Let’s be honest, your hair normally just gets in the way while hiking. It can make you too hot, it can tickle your nose, it can get in the way of your vision if it is windy…. the struggle is real!

So, I figured it would be kinda fun to put together a little post of a variety of hiking hair styles that I use on a regular basis.

Let’s get into it!!!

Hiking Hairstyles for Long Hair

Hiking Hairstyles for Long Hair by Bessie Roaming - Deciding on what to do with your hair while hiking can be challenging. Here are a few tips, tricks, and styles for how to wear your hair while hiking.

The Side Braid:

The side braid is seriously one of my go to hairstyles for pretty much any occasion, but it works wonders while hiking too!

You can either do a simple side braid, or you can do a french braid to hold your bangs and all of your fly away hairs in place. Either way works wonders!

What I have noticed is that you are going to want to have a few bobby pins in order to pin the hair at the back of your neck. This way it keeps the hair off your neck, and also allows your hair to stay in place so much better!

Use a Headband:

Headbands are slowly but surely becoming my best friend. Ok, lets face it, I am obsessed with these thick headbands lately. If I am not at work, or going out and about, you will find me in one of these headbands. Now, typically I am not a ‘brand’ type of person, but I want to be 100% real with you. I have tried all sorts of thick headbands, and the Buff headbands are hands down the very best ever if you want a thick headband.

The other type of headbands that I like are the super baby thin ones. I love these ones because they keep everything out of your face and they don’t stand out at all.

Anyway you look at it, headbands are always a good thing. They are easy, lightweight, comfortable, and cute! I typically wear my hair in a side braid if I wear a headband.

The Classic Ponytail:

This is still a go to. It is easy, cute, and functional. If you haven’t figured it out yet, I am all about functional. I freaking love easy! lol.

A ponytail isn’t my absolute favorite, but when I am having hair issues and I just can’t figure anything else out, I end up wearing my hair in a ponytail.

I really don’t feel like this one needs anymore explanation that just….

PONYTAIL.

Beanies:

Now beanies are rare when it comes to hiking. Most people hike in the summer when you don’t need a beanie, but they are pretty awesome if you are hiking in the right weather.

I love making my own beanies, but I also love buying super cute beanies. There are so many freaking cute beanies out there it becomes really hard to choose.

You can spend anywhere from $10 dollars to $100 it really just depends on what you are looking for.

The one I am wearing in the image is a CC.

Hats:

Hands down everyones favorite, a hat. A hat is pretty much the way to go when you are hiking. You can wear your hair pretty much any way you want to. Wear it down, put it in a side braid, put it in a bun, put it in a ponytail… you name it, you can do it with a hat. Hats are:

  • easy

  • cute

  • fashionable

  • provide sun protection (win win right there)

  • and allow you to not have to worry about how you look!

When in doubt, wear a hat!

Alright friends, there you have it. My go to easy hiking hairstyles. What is your favorite hairstyle while hiking? Make sure to comment below. I would love to hear!
