Camera Gear For Hiking and Backpacking

If you don’t know I am a photographer. Yep, I run a full time photography business called Bessie Young Photography. If you are learning photography I highly recommend heading on over to my site and downloading all my freebies to help you get started!

Well, for my landscape photography side of things I also run a Youtube channel. I created a full video while I was out backpacking last year on all my Camera Gear for Hiking and Backpacking. If you don’t want to watch the video just scroll down to the full list of what I bring. I do suggest watching the video though as I explain why I bring each thing.

So, here are all the Camera Gear for Hiking and Backpacking:

1. Camera and Lens:

  • Sony A7rii

  • 18mm Batis f2.8.

  • 24 - 70mm G master f2.8

2. Filters:

Filters are where it is at. The polarizer will help bring out the clouds in the sky or the reflection on the water. The ND filter will help you get smooth water eve in the middle of the day! It is worth the weight penalty. Just do it. You will thank me later.

3. Cleaning Kit

Backpacking is dirty. Your shit is going to get dirty. Be prepared for that or else you are going to come home with dirt spots all over your images. Believe me, you won’t be happy.

4. Spare lens cap

I seriously can’t stress this enough. I ended up 30 miles into a backpacking trip and hit my lens on a rock. The lens cap flew off and fell into the river. I never found it even after a quite a long time of multiple people trying. The entire trip I was worried I was going to break my lens. I ended up putting a sock over my lens the rest of the trip just to protect it from the dirt.

5. Spare Batteries:

  • Sony batteries

  • Anker Battery pack

6. SD Cards: Bring all the SD cards :)

Literally. Bring all of them. The weight penalty isn’t worth it. Just bring all you cards. You won’t regret it.

7. Tripod

If you are planning on taking night shots or smooth water shots, you need to bring a tripod. I love my lightweight one. Don’t bring something too heavy, but bring something that is going to be sturdy and useful.

8. Peak Design Clip and foot

Basically the best decision I ever made. I actually wrote an entire article about it because it is so important. It is really difficult to figure out how you are going to carry your camera on the trail. Peak design makes it easy now. Just bite the bullet and buy yourself one. There is no reason not to! The price is worth it. Stop second guessing it.

There you have it. All my essential camera gear for hiking and backpacking
